How Do I Qualify?

There are just a few simple eligibility requirements.

Citizenship

You must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent residency status with a valid U.S. Social Security number.

Enrollment

You must be enrolled at least half-time at a school eligible for Nelnet Bank loans during the loan period you're applying for.

Credit

You or your cosigner must have a FICO® score in the mid to high 600s or higher.

Age

You must be old enough to enter a binding contract in your state or territory. Applicants who are 16 or 17 years old may apply with a qualified cosigner.

Why Add a Cosigner?

Only about 10% of Nelnet Bank borrowers are approved without a cosigner. While not required, a creditworthy cosigner may dramatically strengthen your application and help you qualify for better rates.

Private loan interest rates—like those from Nelnet Bank—are determined by the lender and based on several factors, including creditworthiness and loan terms.

What are the eligibility requirements for a student loan?

To qualify, you’ll need to meet the following:

  • Be enrolled at least half-time at a Nelnet Bank-eligible school during the loan period.

  • You or your cosigner must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a valid Social Security number.

Undergraduate Loans

  • Minimum: $1,000

  • Maximum: $125,000

Graduate Loans

  • Minimum: $1,000

  • Maximums:

  • Graduate and doctorate: $175,000

  • MBA or graduate law degree: $175,000

  • Graduate health professions degree: $500,000

Note: Maximum loan amounts are subject to total student loan debt limits.

A cosigner is a creditworthy individual who agrees to take responsibility for the loan if the borrower doesn’t repay. Applying with a cosigner may help you qualify and could lower your interest rate. Cosigners must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

What kind of monthly payment should I expect?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Your monthly payment depends on how much you borrow and the repayment option you choose.

What repayment options are available?

You can choose from several flexible repayment options:

  • Immediate Repayment: Start full principal and interest payments as soon as the loan is disbursed.

  • Interest-Only Repayment: Pay interest while in school; full payments begin after you leave school.

  • Deferred Repayment: No payments while in school, but interest accrues during this time.

  • Fixed Payment: Pay $25 per month while in school; full payments begin after separation. Interest accrues during this time.
